We went behind the camera with rising creative superstar Lonwabo Zimela as he unveiled his first solo exhibition,  “Friends of King Zimela”.

Estimated Reading Time: 1.5 Minute

Naturally shy, King Zimela says his camera is one of the things that have allowed him to express himself. With “Friends of King Zimela”, he uses photography to show appreciation for the friendships he has experienced since moving to Johannesburg.

During the discussion an excited follower asked Zimela why it took him so long to do something on his own. King Zimela blamed “chronic perfectionism” and anxiety about missing what he believes is the single, perfect opportunity every creative has at major success.

"I never want to rush things. I'd rather wear in than wear out." - King Zimela

Having lived in Eastern Cape, KZN and now Johannesburg, King Zimela has successfully transitioned from street style, to runway and studio photography. All while maintaining his emotive, detailed technique and telling the stories of the places he has found himself in.

The young photographer continues to plan big things for the future and left the J&B Hive with the following words of encouragement:

“Whatever you have in your mind, just start. Even if you’re not sure, you can’t go anywhere without getting started.”

A major success, a brief video of the exhibition can be viewed here:
